Remember Buckles

What a difficult and humbling day it was yesterday. Buckles, who was 13 yrs and 8 months was put to sleep last night.

Over the last few days, I had noticed our walks were much more difficult for him.  Then yesterday, Buckles made it about 3 houses away, when he looked at me like, that’s it. So, I picked him up and carried him home.

This morning when I woke up, I said morning buddy, and he waged his tail a little and that was it.  I could see the life was out of him and he didn’t want to move. I called Savannah and Brett and said, I think today’s his day.

Savannah had requested in a previous conversation to have a vet visit our home so Buckles was comfortable – which was a great idea not just for Buckles, but for all of us.

When I called this morning, Savannah being away at school didn’t know what to do. Brett, the great brother he is, made it clear, she needed to be here and offered to go pick her up.  I agreed, however considering it’s a 5 hr drive, I suggested a rental car.  Instead, Savannah’s best friend Sarah let her borrow her car.

I spent the day keeping Buckles company, talking about the good old days – like running along our Land Rover for hours every day up at the land, while we would be knocking down tree’s and making paths in the woods, or how at the park, all the kids would watch him run jump and catch the ball before it bounced twice after I threw it about 65 yards with the “chuck it”.  He loved putting on show, just like his TV star mom, Raven.

Savannah finally arrived home at  5 pm and within a few short seconds she agreed it was time. Brett came over an hour later and we all spent the last few hours talking with Buckles, reliving the more of our special memories.

As U can imagine it was very emotional for us all.  He was really a fantastic dog. And, he most definitely had long and glorious life. He touched many peoples hearts – like our postal lady – who would leave him treats on our mailbox everyday for him.  She is going to be heart broken when I tell her today.

The pic we posted, Savannah found in one of our many photo albums.  It’s Brett, Buckles and Savannah in our heart shaped sandbox up at the land – digging for treasure (the $100 of change I buried for them).  They were all so young. Like us, Buckles just loved it at the land. Savannah, Brett and I decided, over spring break we will spread Buckles’ ashes up at the land and along our stream down below.

I’m a lucky guy to have such a great family!

I believed I shared in past posts, Buckles had a theme song. He always loved hearing me sing it.  Yesterday, I sang it to him about 50 times including when he was drifting away.

“Buckles is a good boy, good boy, good boy, Buckles is a good boy, yeah!”

  3. What a wonderful tribute to Buckles and the tremendous impact he had on your lives! I applaud each of you for making such a tough decision with the well being of this wonderful companion being #1. Its all about the quality of life, not the quantity, but in his case he seems to have had both, thanks to your love!
Big hugs and warm thoughts to all of you as you grieve this great loss…
