Heroic Heart

Yesterday morning I was walking Buckles and thinking about the story I heard the night before about Ashley.  Right then I noticed this leaf with a heart shaped hole. I decided to frame it and will be giving it to Ashley to show her my appreciation of her heroic hand in saving a child’s life.

I want everyone to hear about this story – U too might learn something and even though I hope U never find yourself in this situation, if so, U will now know what to do.

Early this week, Rylee and Ashley were contemplating what night to go over and sign up for a new dual membership at the Life Time Fitness off 42 in Savage, MN.  They finally decided to get it over with and do it that night.

Once there, while Rylee was filling out the information, Ashley stood by and waited for her turn to get her pic taken for the membership card.  While waiting Ashley noticed there was a mother and her happy full of life toddler boy behind her.

Seconds later, Ashley heard this mother start panicking and completely losing it. She turned around and noticed this toddler was laying on the floor, his face was completely blue and lips were dark blue.  Ashley turned to the mother and tried to communicate with her, asking if her baby was eating anything. The mother was not able to communicate, she was completely hysterical.  The Life Time Fitness employee near them had already went into action trying to give the child the Heimlich Maneuver, although Ashley could instantly see that was not working, she knew something was blocking his airway.

Ashley immediately, grabbed a hold the back of the toddler’s head, the Life Time Fitness employee looked at Ashley and without a word they communicated and the employee let Ashley take over.  Ashley used both hands to force the child’s jaw open which then in turn un blocked the airway freeing the child’s tongue that had been swallowed back.

The child instantly came to and was very upset that Ashley was applying pressure to his jaw – Ashley said, “that was a great sign, he was going to be OK.”

Rylee said this was the scariest and craziest thing he ever witnessed, as he stood there and watched all this happen over the course of a minute that seemed more like forever – all he said he could do was, ask GOD over and over to please let this baby breathe.

I was so amazed by Ashley and this story.  Like the Life Time Fitness employee, I would have given the child the Heimlich as well, I had no idea about unblocking an airway by forcing the jaw open.

I believe it is very important we are learn about this, as I mentioned above, let’s hope U never do witness this happening. However, if U do, now U will know what to do to step in and help.  Please click on the links above to learn more.

Just think, if Ashley didn’t move up from Florida the week before, or if they didn’t decide to go to Life Time Fitness to sign up for the dual membership that night, this child would not be alive.  Everything happens for a reason!!

In honor of Ashley’s heroic action, is why I framed this leaf with a heart in it for her – as a reminder of this wonderful act in saving this child’s life.  Personally, I’m so proud of Ashley. 🙂

If U are too, let her know by giving your thoughts and comments below.
